Head of Competence Unit, Optical Quantum Technologies at AIT Austrian Institute of Technology

Hannes Hübel obtained his PhD in 2004 from Queen Mary, University of London, UK. In the same year he joined the quantum information group at the University of Vienna, to work on experimental quantum communication, in particular Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). After a research stay at the University of Waterloo, Canada and an assistant professorship position at the University of Stockholm, Sweden, he joined the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Vienna, Austria in 2025 to work on experimental quantum key distribution.

Dr. Hübel is very much involved in the European Union’s effort to bring Quantum Technologies to the market. He coordinated the Quantum Technology flagship project UNIQORN as well as the QKD pilot project OPENQKD. Lately he shifted his focus more towards QKD deployments, managing the roll-out of QKD networks in Austria and coordinating European efforts. Since 2026 he is Head of the Competence Unit “Optical Quantum Technologies” at AIT.
