Fernando Villarruel

Fernando Villarruel is a Senior Advisor to Tibit Technologies, an insular business unit within Ciena. In this capacity he is tasked with taking Ciena’s PON investment to scale, particularly focusing on creating a worldwide portfolio of OEM partners who leverage Tibit’s component and subsystem technologies to further our novel approach to high throughput PON solutions. Fernado is also tasked with investigating PON applications beyond the access and beyond the service provide, with current focus on Campus PON.

Fernando was recently the Chief Architect for Ciena’s MSO Practice with responsibility for developing the company’s long-term vision for MSO networking, including advances in optics, switching, and automation software.

A broadband veteran, Fernando has delivered impactful solutions to the industry for more than 20 years, including fundamental contributions to linear access transmission and connectivity for distributed technologies. Fernando received Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Physics from California State University, and a Master of Science degree in Physical Sciences from the University of Chicago.
