Evolution in IP Transport: Adapting to Traffic Growth and New Architectures

Vivek Gaur’s keynote positioned IP transport as the foundational layer of the modern digital economy - the substrate enabling every cloud interaction, AI inference, video stream, enterprise workflow, and autonomous system. He argued that the industry is entering a period of structural change driven by traffic growth, distributed endpoints, new architectural demands, and rising expectations for resilience and sustainability. His presentation outlined both the macro forces reshaping IP transport and Colt’s strategic response across global reach, scalability, convergence, automation, security, and sustainability.

Market Forces and Architectural Shifts Reshaping IP Transport

Gaur emphasised that IP transport has shifted from a packet‑moving utility to a value‑moving platform underpinning digital society. Several forces are accelerating this shift. Traffic explosion is being driven by AI workloads, 8K media, immersive AR/VR, industrial IoT, and cloud‑native applications. Distributed endpoints are multiplying as IoT, mobile devices, and cloud‑edge architectures increase the number and diversity of IP termination points. Security and geopolitical pressures, including cable cuts, cyberattacks, and regional risk, are forcing operators to redesign for resilience. Sustainability imperatives mean that energy‑efficient transport is no longer optional.

It was noted that more than 30% of enterprises have seen traffic grow by over 50% in the past year, and the global routing ecosystem now includes more than 77,000 autonomous systems. These are clear indicators that traditional transport architectures must evolve.

A structural shift in WAN traffic patterns was also highlighted: workloads are moving away from enterprise data centres toward cloud, content, and social platforms. This shift is driving major architectural requirements. Secure multi‑cloud access at multi‑hundred‑gigabit speeds is becoming fundamental. SD‑WAN and SASE adoption is rising to optimise branch and remote user connectivity. Elastic WAN capabilities are needed to support AI compute, particularly east‑west traffic and low‑latency inference. Meanwhile, content and social media traffic continues to grow rapidly. These trends collectively demand a transport network that is elastic, cloud‑integrated, and capable of deterministic performance under increasingly complex traffic conditions.

Strategic Imperatives for Next‑Generation IP Transport

Gaur outlined six priorities guiding Colt’s network evolution: global reach, scalability and elasticity, convergence, automation and AI, security, and sustainability by design.

From a global reach perspective, Colt’s fibre and IP footprint spans Europe, the Americas, and Asia, with multi‑terabit transatlantic capacity and diversified Eurasia routes designed to avoid geopolitical hotspots. Gaur stressed that global reach is not only about scale but also intelligent topology design to ensure availability, diversity, and performance.

On scalability and elasticity, Colt has deployed C+L‑band flex‑grid optical networks across more than 8,500 km, enabling multi‑terabit capacity growth. Trials and deployments of 800G and 1T coherent pluggables further extend scalability. Elasticity must also be exposed to customers, which is why Colt has introduced intent‑based networking, allowing users to request low‑latency paths, disjoint routes, or even “green paths” that select the most sustainable geography based on real‑time telemetry.

Gaur positioned convergence as a major lever for cost efficiency and operational simplification. Colt was an early adopter of 400G ZR/ZR+ IP‑over‑DWDM, achieving long‑haul deployments such as London–Brussels. The company is now trialling 800G ZR+ and ultra‑long‑haul coherent optics. Internally, Colt is consolidating autonomous systems following the Lumen EMEA acquisition, enabling more efficient routing, better service scalability, and differentiated architectures for web‑scale versus enterprise customers.

Gaur described Colt’s long‑term investment in software‑defined networking, API‑driven service consumption, and fine‑grained telemetry. These capabilities support closed‑loop automation, predictive capacity management, and real‑time optimisation. Colt is also developing network digital twins to simulate behaviour, validate changes, and accelerate automation.

On security, Colt is pursuing quantum‑safe networking, conducting trials across optical, IP, and application layers using QKD, PQC, and satellite‑based key distribution. Gaur stressed that security must be multi‑layered and future‑proof.

Sustainability is embedded into Colt’s engineering strategy, with initiatives such as integrated routed‑optical architectures, green‑path routing, and lightweight core routers delivering up to 97% power reduction in parts of the network.

Towards an AI‑Native WAN

Gaur concluded that the future WAN must become intelligent, adaptive, and AI‑native. Machine‑to‑machine communication, low‑latency AI inference, and agentic automation will redefine traffic patterns and service expectations. Colt’s vision integrates SDN, intent‑based networking, telemetry‑driven learning, and autonomous assurance, all exposed through APIs and on‑demand platforms.
